The Season of Giving

by Dawn Varga

October 20, 2021

The last quarter of the year is full of holiday fun and festivities. It is also a season of gift-giving during which people are more inclined to give to others. This includes giving to family, friends, employees, customers, suppliers, and especially to those in need.

The benefits of giving are numerous and can have a positive effect on not only the receiver, but also on the giver. So what are some reasons people give?

  • To make difference in the lives of other people
  • To support a cause they find important
  • To gain a sense of personal satisfaction and happiness
  • To reduce a tax burden while also helping others
And giving is contagious! When others witness or experience the benefits of giving by others, they become inspired to join in. Therefore, it is the perfect time to get the whole team involved. A company-wide holiday season charitable campaign can bring your employees together and create a positive work environment, all while providing great benefit to your charity of choice.

So, whether you start a Thanksgiving food drive, adopt needy families for Christmas, or have your team volunteer at a soup kitchen while still "on the clock", you will find that it is good for business. And don't forget to share your giving campaign on your social media or website because it will show you are a business that cares for the community, which can earn a company "brownie points" with consumers. You may also get them to participate with you!

There are an unlimited amount of people and causes locally, nationally, and worldwide that are in need of help. We encourage you to make an effort this quarter to pay it forward with a season of giving within your business -- you will be glad you did!

Corporate philanthropy benefits not only the community but your company and its employees as well. And while that’s always been true, it’s even truer today. As society shifts toward more prominent social, environmental, and economic responsibility, the importance of corporate philanthropy has increased as well. It’s become essential to business success, bringing more benefits with a greater impact on performance.

This article will explore five business benefits of corporate philanthropy and provide practical recommendations for what your company can do to achieve them.

5 Business Benefits of Corporate Philanthropy

1. Increase Employee Engagement and Productivity

Up to 78 percent of employees want to engage with corporate social responsibility initiatives. Philanthropy programs that directly involve employees help create deeper connections and increase employee engagement. Employee engagement then improves productivity and business results. Research by Gallup even found that teams with high employee engagement have 21 percent higher productivity than their counterparts.

How to Use Corporate Philanthropy to Boost Engagement and Productivity

To see these benefits, create a corporate philanthropy program that encourages employees to get involved. Allow employees to select the charities they want to donate to, create crowdfunding campaigns, and use paid volunteering to amplify their impact.

By giving employees the ability to choose the charity they benefit, with tools that help them make a bigger impact, you help them become more invested in the process. As they continue investing and getting involved, you’ll see correlations in engagement and productivity.
